PROVIDENCE – Two faculty members from Brown Physicians Inc. have received national recognition for their work in emergency medicine. The Society for Academic Emergency Medicine honored Dr. Christian Arbelaez and Dr. Brian Clyne during its annual meeting in Las Vegas this month.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (May 21, 2019) — The Society for Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM) recognized two faculty members from Brown Physicians, Inc. (BPI) during its 30th SAEM Annual Meeting in Las Vegas, Nev. Selected from a pool of candidates nationally, Dr. Christian Arbelaez and Dr. Brian Clyne were selected as recipients of the prestigious awards for their contributions in the field of emergency medicine.

Dr. Arbelaez, an Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine at the Alpert Medical School of Brown University and Vice Chair of Academic Affairs at Brown Emergency Medicine, received SAEM’s Marcus L. Martin Leadership in Diversity and Inclusion Award. This award distinguishes an emergency physician for their extraordinary leadership contributions to the advancement of Diversity and Inclusion in emergency medicine.

For more than 15 years, Dr. Arbelaez has worked to enhance the academic mission of clinical sites with a special emphasis on promoting diversity, inclusion, and equity. “I am honored to receive this award from SAEM,” Dr. Arbelaez said. “The issues of diversity, inclusion, and equity continue to be of the utmost importance across our faculty and trainees and will help address the disparities we see in our communities in the emergency department.”

Dr. Arbelaez, who also serves as the co-chair of BPI’s Diversity and Inclusion Committee, holds clinical appointments at Rhode Island Hospital, The Miriam Hospital, Newport Hospital, and Hasbro Children’s Hospital — which are all part of the Lifespan health system. A renowned leader whose scholarly work includes over 70 publications, Dr. Arbelaez has also helped build emergency care systems and public health policies in over 10 countries.

Dr. Brian Clyne, an Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine and Medical Science as well as the Vice Chair for Education in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Lifespan and the Alpert Medical School of Brown University, received the SAEM’s Hal Jayne Excellence in Education Award. This award honors a SAEM member who has made outstanding contributions to emergency medicine through the teaching of others and the improvement of pedagogy.

During his 20-year career, Dr. Clyne has earned national praise for teaching hundreds of medical students and residents and helping shape training programs for aspiring emergency physicians.

“The Society for Academic Emergency Medicine recognizes that education is directly related to the quality of patient care. I am very honored to receive this award, especially considering the impact prior recipients have had on our specialty,” Dr. Clyne said.

Dr. Clyne practices emergency medicine at Rhode Island Hospital, The Miriam Hospital, Newport Hospital, and Hasbro Children’s Hospital. He has published extensively on medical education, leadership development, career planning, and healthcare workforce issues.

The Society for Academic Emergency Medicine, comprised of a network of over 6,000 emergency medicine physicians, was founded in 1989 as a non-profit organization dedicated to improving emergency medicine and patient care through the advancement of research and education.

This year, the organization recognized the achievements of emergency medicine specialists across 12 categories. Nominee submissions are reviewed by an Awards Committee based on guidelines for each award.

Why the Brown Medicine Endoscopy Center is the Preferred Choice for Preventative Care

Most doctors agree that you shouldn’t wait to get screened for colorectal cancer. As organizations celebrate National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month this March, Brown Physicians, Inc. caught up with Dr. Harlan Rich to discuss who is at risk for colon cancer and the actions you can take today to remain healthy.

“Essentially, everyone over the age of 50 is at risk for colon cancer and we usually look to identify people who may be at a higher risk,” said Dr. Rich, a gastroenterologist with Brown Medicine, which is one of six foundations that compose Brown Physicians, Inc.

Colon cancer is a scary topic for most people, but Dr. Rich says it is important to get screened early for better outcomes. “This is one of the cancers that are treatable if you catch it early, and curable if you catch it really early,” Dr. Rich said.

With screening being the best preventative measure against colon cancer, he emphasized that it is important for people to recognize their own individual risk for the disease and to seek a specialist regardless of the time of year. “Even though March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, we want everyone to be aware of their risk for colon cancer and to be screened throughout the year,” Dr. Rich said.

Dr. Rich, who is also an associate professor of medicine at the Warren Alpert Medical School and is affiliated with Rhode Island Hospital and The Miriam Hospital, suggested that younger people could also be at a higher risk for colon cancer depending on their family’s medical history. He says this population and other at-risk groups should have a colonoscopy performed at the Brown Medicine Endoscopy Center for preventative and practical reasons.

“Colonoscopies are the gold standard for diagnosing colon cancer because it can be a one-stop procedure for diagnostics, therapeutics, taking samples, and removing lesions,” said Dr. Rich. “The Brown Medicine Endoscopy Center allows a patient to come to a comfortable, personalized setting with state-of-the-art equipment equivalent to what would be seen in a hospital with ease of access.”
