Why the Brown Medicine Endoscopy Center is the Preferred Choice for Preventative Care

Most doctors agree that you shouldn’t wait to get screened for colorectal cancer. As organizations celebrate National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month this March, Brown Physicians, Inc. caught up with Dr. Harlan Rich to discuss who is at risk for colon cancer and the actions you can take today to remain healthy.

“Essentially, everyone over the age of 50 is at risk for colon cancer and we usually look to identify people who may be at a higher risk,” said Dr. Rich, a gastroenterologist with Brown Medicine, which is one of six foundations that compose Brown Physicians, Inc.

Colon cancer is a scary topic for most people, but Dr. Rich says it is important to get screened early for better outcomes. “This is one of the cancers that are treatable if you catch it early, and curable if you catch it really early,” Dr. Rich said.

With screening being the best preventative measure against colon cancer, he emphasized that it is important for people to recognize their own individual risk for the disease and to seek a specialist regardless of the time of year. “Even though March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, we want everyone to be aware of their risk for colon cancer and to be screened throughout the year,” Dr. Rich said.

Dr. Rich, who is also an associate professor of medicine at the Warren Alpert Medical School and is affiliated with Rhode Island Hospital and The Miriam Hospital, suggested that younger people could also be at a higher risk for colon cancer depending on their family’s medical history. He says this population and other at-risk groups should have a colonoscopy performed at the Brown Medicine Endoscopy Center for preventative and practical reasons.

“Colonoscopies are the gold standard for diagnosing colon cancer because it can be a one-stop procedure for diagnostics, therapeutics, taking samples, and removing lesions,” said Dr. Rich. “The Brown Medicine Endoscopy Center allows a patient to come to a comfortable, personalized setting with state-of-the-art equipment equivalent to what would be seen in a hospital with ease of access.”

Another reason why patients should consider Brown Medicine for their gastroenterology needs comes down to costs, Dr. Rich added. “We have the same equipment that’s at the hospital, and we are able to perform the same procedures with the same level of skill and expertise at a reduced cost when compared to a traditional hospital setting. More importantly, all of the procedures done at Brown Medicine are performed by Warren Alpert Medical School faculty members who are also responsible for training the next generation of gastroenterologists and physicians.”

With a commitment to improve patient care, promote medical education, and advance research, Brown Physicians, Inc. encourages patients to learn more about the Brown Medicine Endoscopy Center here. PROVIDENCE, R.I. (February 4, 2019) — Brown Physicians, Inc. (BPI), the physician-led practice group that was created to coordinate and enhance the quality of care for patients in Rhode Island, has named Lisa Blackmon as its Chief Information Officer. Blackmon will play a key role in directing Information Technology initiatives and spearheading the development of technology platforms that will make it easier for patients in Rhode Island to meet with specialty physicians.

“Lisa’s in-depth knowledge of Information Technology and her experience leading the technology initiatives at University Surgical Associates have prepared her well for the responsibilities and duties assigned to the Chief Information Officer,” said Dr. Angela Caliendo, BPI’s Executive Director and Executive Vice Chair of Medicine at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. “We look forward to working closely with her to expand BPI’s impact on the health care system in Rhode Island.”

Blackmon will be responsible for overseeing the implementation of a shared electronic medical record and a combined referral platform that will leverage the resources of BPI’s six foundations, which include Brown Dermatology, Brown Emergency Medicine, Brown Medicine, Brown Neurology, Brown Urology, and University Surgical Associates. She will also work collaboratively with the IT departments of each foundation to continue the integration of BPI’s internal IT infrastructure and, ultimately, improve the referral process for patients who have various medical needs.

With a background in information technology that spans more than 25 years, Blackmon successfully led many IT initiatives at Textron and, most recently, at University Surgical Associates (USA), where she serves as the Director of Information Technology. In this role, she oversees the infrastructure, compliance, security, and risk management for the organization. She is expected to remain in her position at USA while serving in her new role.

“I look forward to working with the executive leadership of BPI and supporting BPI’s mission to improve patient care, expand medical research, and teach the next generation of medical professionals,” Blackmon said. “By pooling our resources from the six foundations, I am confident that we can provide the solutions that will improve the overall patient experience.”

December 4, 2018 News

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (December 3, 2018) — Members of the R.I. General Assembly, and physicians from Brown Dermatology were honored during the annual Cancer Research Breakfast at Roger Williams Park Casino for their leadership in helping pass legislation that makes it illegal for minors to use tanning beds in Rhode Island.

“If you are under 18, you cannot go to a tanning booth,” said Bernard Jackvony, a national board member of the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN), which hosted the event. Jackvony praised the efforts of General Assembly members, and Brown Dermatology physicians who have helped make Rhode Island a national leader in cancer prevention.

Dr. Helena Kuhn, Dr. Mary Teeple, and Dr. Martin Weinstock were each presented with a Certificate of Appreciation from ACS CAN for providing testimonies in support of the tanning bill sponsored by Senate Majority Whip Maryellen Goodwin and Deputy Majority Leader Mia Ackerman. All three doctors are faculty members of the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University.

“We are proud to have contributed to the successful effort to protect minors from indoor tanning, an important, potentially addictive carcinogen targeted at teenagers and young adults. We would also like to congratulate ACS-CAN and our state legislators for advocating this important skin cancer prevention effort,” Brown Dermatology physicians said in a joint statement.

Jackvony was joined by Ana Novais, deputy director of the R.I. Department of Health, and Vic Vetters, who served as the master of ceremonies and is the general manager of WJAR. They collectively echoed the calls of Jackvony about the importance of funding cancer research and calling on elected officials to support cancer prevention efforts.

A panel discussion featuring a renowned group of physicians and researchers followed. The group discussed a wide range of issues such as the importance of palliative care in treating patients with cancer, advances in cancer research such as immunotherapy, and why providing cancer patients with more access to clinical trials could pave the way for more breakthroughs in the field of oncology.

The importance of cancer research was reinforced with the story of Josue Flores, who was brought to the stage to share his experience with cancer. Flores, who is now cancer free, plans to attend college and eventually serve the country.
